Using the lightSTUDIO with the LED lightHEAD
I'm extensively testing the image quality of digital cameras and mobile phones at my laboratory, using a variety of Image Engineering products. In addition, I installed the lightSTUDIO with the LED lightHEAD this spring.
The lightSTUDIO was originally an excellent tool, which enabled me to do the test under different light sources, but due to the LEDlight HEAD, the new lightSTUDIO is very useful, since it can make a simulation of different light sources.
It is very convenient, because I can check the descriptions of the textures with a single shot. The objects which come with the lightSTUDIO from Image Engineering already cover most of the objects and the only thing I have to do is to add the additional objects which are required for my particular purposes so that I can test the true abilities of the cameras and mobile phones.
Furthermore, if I operate the light STUDIO via my PC, just a click in the pre-described menu gives me the chance to switch the light source immediately to not only the standard D50 but also D75 or 3200 K, which exist in real life. The test under the monochromatic lights is also easy. The lightSTUDIO demonstrates great power when I check the auto white balance capability of the camera, because it can generate any mixed light with perfect freedom. Of course, I'm hoping that I can add the light sources to the lightSTUDIO which are required for my particular purpose, because it's impossible to reproduce the emission line spectrum or monochromatic light like a fluorescent lamp or a sodium lamp even with the lightSTUDIO and with the LED lightHEAD.
In addition, what is unexpectedly convenient with the lightSTUDIO is that I can change the light level without changing the light source. This is an essential point, especially when testing the latest digital cameras with an extremely high sensitivity or the performance of mobile phones with which you cannot adjust aperture and shutter speed at a low light level.
What impressed me by the lightSTUDIO is its low power consumption. Since my laboratory is an ordinary room, there is a limit to the electricity supply, but I don't have to worry about power consumption thanks to the LED lightHEAD. The low heat is also a big advantage.
A further feature I have with the LED lightHEAD is that I don't have to worry about the deterioration of the light sources after using the LEDs for a long time. Even if deterioration occurs, it is possible to reproduce the same light source for a long period, if I measure and correct the light source’s data. This is a clear advantage over the lightSTUDIO with its conventional light sources. Considering the stability of the test environment and the running costs, there are many merits for selecting the lightSTUDIO with the LED lightHEAD, even if it is a bit more expensive compared to the conventional one.
The lightSTUDIO with the LED lightHEAD is an extremely satisfactory tool and, once you become accustomed to it, you cannot go back to the conventional lightSTUDIO. For me, I have no complaint at all with the lightSTUDIO with the LED lightHEAD, but it would be more convenient, if the operating software were in Japanese and an easier programming of the operations were possible. Maybe I set my hopes high.
